Card settlement at End of Day

At End of Day the closing station captures and settles the day's card payments through the terminals. Most closes settle cleanly. If the terminal doesn't return a clear result, EOD marks the settlement unknown — an indeterminate state that may already have completed at the processor. An unknown settlement is resolved by the recovery flow, never by blindly re-settling.

Before you start

  • Run EOD from the station whose terminals took the card payments.
  • Don't power off terminals mid-settlement.

Steps

  1. Reach the settlement phaseAfter readiness, acknowledgements, and tips, EOD moves to Capture → Settle.
  2. Let settlement runEOD settles the batches; watch the progress messages.
  3. Handle an unknown resultIf a settlement is unknown, use the guided recovery to confirm the batch's real state — do not simply re-run it.
  4. Confirm settledOnce batches settle, EOD continues to freeze the summary.

Common mistakes

  • Re-running a settlement that returned unknown — it may already have settled at the processor.
  • Cutting power to a terminal during settlement.

Troubleshooting

Settlement reports unknown.

Use the EOD recovery/verification flow to confirm the batch state. Contact support if it can't be resolved; don't force a second settlement.

A terminal isn't responding during settle.

Confirm the terminal is online and on the network, then follow the settlement recovery prompts.
