POS how-to

Kitchen display training

Provision the KDS, work ticket states, bump and recall, and recover when a display or printer fails.

Audience

Kitchen staff and expo running a Pedestal KDS.

Before you start

  • The kitchen display is provisioned as its own station and online.
  • Menu routing sends the right items to this station.
  • A fallback kitchen printer is available in case the display drops.

How to

Modules and lessons

Module 1

Set up the KDS

Provision the kitchen display and sign in.

  1. Lesson 1.1

    KDS sign-in and provisioning

Provision the kitchen display as its own station with an install code, then sign in. Confirm it is bound to the correct kitchen station before service.

Module 2

Run tickets

Read ticket states, bump completed tickets, and recall where supported.

  1. Lesson 2.1

    Ticket states

Read new, in-progress, and completed states so the line knows what to fire next and what is already working.

  2. Lesson 2.2

    Bump

Bump a ticket when the items are ready to clear it from the active queue and advance the line.

  3. Lesson 2.3

    Recall (where supported)

Where recall is supported, bring back a recently bumped ticket to re-check an item or re-fire it after a remake.

Module 3

Recover

Fall back to printed tickets and chase down missing ones.

  1. Lesson 3.1

    Printer fallback

When a kitchen printer is the fallback, confirm routed items still print if a display is offline so nothing is lost.

  2. Lesson 3.2

    Missing ticket troubleshooting

If a ticket never appears, confirm the item was sent, the routing points to this station, and the display is online — then ask a manager to re-fire or check device status.

Practice

Practice checklist

  • Sign in to the provisioned KDS

  • Advance a ticket through its states

  • Bump a completed ticket

  • Recall a bumped ticket where supported

  • Confirm printer fallback for a routed item

Watch-outs

Common mistakes

  • Bumping a ticket before the whole order is ready.
  • Ignoring a display that has dropped offline mid-service.
  • Not checking routing when a ticket never appears.
